Horror in the South

In the April 30, 2011 issue of the RVtravel.com newsletter, editor Chuck Woodbury writes of his sadness over the terrible devastation and loss of life caused days earlier in the South by tornadoes. If you wish to leave a comment on what he wrote, you may do so here.

I had friends who mocked Al Gore and others for their "Global Warming" warnings. I told them they should really try to understand what GW does. It is not just that the earth gets warmer but instead that the earth will experience extreme weather conditions due to adverse warming and cooling. Hurricanes and tornadoes are two examples. I would not doubt that GW might also have some bearing on earth quakes due to extreme changes in the temperature of the earth's crust. Only time will tell.

I work in Birmingham, AL and live 15 miles away to the SE. I had watched the one in DT Tuscaloosa less than an hour before and knew that was a terrible storm. The large tornado that hit B'ham was less than a mile n of our offices and was the same tornado that had hit Tuscaloosa earlier. I was watching it on TV at the time and was astounded at the size of the tornado. I knew there would be much damage and loss of life as I watched. Over 200 dead so far and it will grow larger. You can't imagine how awesome this was. Pray for these people that have lost family and friends, homes, jobs and all they own.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those that were effected by these terrible storms.
The Red Cross donations does appear to be something that we can do.....since I'm sure that many of us feel helpless at this time...living far away from the destruction.

Another thought, may be to take a vacation to the area, to help out with rebuilding. Much the way many people did after Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

I wonder how many of those RVs that were sent to the area are still available for the folks in AL??

My hometown of Bear Creek, AL is 5 miles from two of the small towns hit - Phil Campbell to the north and Hackleburg to the west. The devastation there is beyond belief. We are in the Shoals area and were not hard-hit.
My son is putting together an emergency radio station to begin broadcasts from the area asap - he is a radio engineer. We are looking for an RV for him to use as a base - there is no electricity, water, phone coverage, etc there - and praying that someone will lend us one. I don't have a rig yet, although I am a definite wannabe FT RVer. Sure wish I had a rig and he would already be set up and offering assitance to the victims and the volunteers. They have ONE satellite phone for all the ER personnel to use. Things are BAD!

Thank you SO much for using your platform to help people understand the devastation here in the South. We are truly grateful!
